Royal Gallery of Marymass Queens

Crowning 1937In the mid 1920s the people of Irvine were adjusting to the horror of the First World War, and depression was part and parcel of everyday life. Marymass had lost its religious associations; people tried hard to make ends meet; a general strike was on the horizon. Out of the gloom, a number of Carters had other things in mind. The then Captain, James Sloan, held a meeting - the agenda (an idea of Mr P S Clark) was to bring Mary Queen of Scots and her four Marys into celebrations. The year 1928 would be the first.

The photo on the left shows the crowning of Theresa Quinn in 1937 - note the War Memorial in its original position in the middle of the street.
